Questions that I will likely be the only one to answer - Part 1

1) Why did people like Jack give up a chance at a stable occupation? (For example Jack deciding to leave the security guard job almost as soon as he got it)

2) Why does Jack's aunt send him so much money? Does she have any idea what he is doing?

3) What compelled people to risk the dangers of hitchhiking during that time period?

4) Why is it uncommon to see hitchhiking today and what has changed since then?

  1. 1) I think people like Jack were not seeking a stable occupation. I think the only reason they worked at all was to support their beatnik lifestyle. They did not want to be confined to a single place and traveled around as much as possible.
    2) I think Jack's aunt is completely ignorant of his lifestyle. I think she loves her nephew very much and maybe does not even have kids of her own. She thinks highly of her nephew and if giving him money will help him, she will do it.
    3) People hitchhiked because thay enjoyed it. It was a big part of the beat culture of the time to deny societial conformity and seek independence. They enjoyed the thrille of traveling all over the country and having many different experiences they wouldn't have had otherwise. No one thought of the dangers involved and people were usually kind enough to give someone a ride if they had space in their vehicle.
    4) Much has changed since the early to mid 1900s, and hitchhiking is pretty rare to see today. The mentality of people has changed so much that usually it would not be considered as a form of travel. People now are afraid of who could be picking them up and giving away control of themselves. Drivers today are also afraid because they have no idea who they could be picking up. Picking up a complete a stranger could be just as dangerous as getting in a car with a complete stranger.
