1. Why does Gatsby choose to become closer to Tom (bringing him to his house, having him come to his party, visiting him and Daisy at their house), if Tom is the only thing keeping Daisy from him?
2.Why does Gatsby choose to live such a lavish lifestyle and host large, regal parties, if he refuses to tell people what he does and likes to keep his source of income a secret?
3. Gatsby is finally officially exposed as a bootlegger, but a secret side business is revealed (141). What could possibly be going on and how has Gatsby been able to stay out of jail for so long when his business is less than discreet; with people like Tom being able to find out about it in a matter of days?
4. How can Gatsby possibly break Tom and Daisy up? Has his new, aggressive attempt been effective (139)? What could he have done instead of this and how could the results have differed?
5. What is the deal with the "death car"!?? Could Myrtle Wilson's death have been a rage filled murder caused by Daisy's resentment of Tom's "revolting" affair? What will happen to Daisy and Gatsby if they are found out and Gatsby takes the blame for her?
Maybe gatsby doesnt want to make so obvious that he wants to steal his wife so he acts a little nervous around him.
ReplyDeleteQuestin#2 I feel that gatsby lives to impress daisy and all of his flashy materials and life style is just to hide the true reason that he is deeply in love with a married women.
ReplyDelete1) Gatsby realizes Tom is at this point his sole enemy and the only thing in between him and Daisy, so he is doing the whole "keep your enemies close" maneuver and trying to befriend Tom to find a weakness or an opportunity to strike.
ReplyDelete2) Gatsby enjoys showing his wealth off and would rather be well known and impress Daisy than be safe and below the law. If he gets found out he could care less and would rather risk it and display his fortune.
ReplyDelete3) Since Gatsby's side business can't be bootlegging, i would guess it something along the lines of some sort of drugs or a real criminal organization. He must be paying off the cops or is just really crafty when dealing with legal problems in his bootlegging business.
ReplyDelete4) Gatsby's best bet at breaking the two up is completely convincing Daisy that she would be better off with him. His aggressiveness was definitely effective, because it got Daisy to tell the truth, but i think Tom has just as effectively been resilient and Daisy's opinion has not exactly been changed. His best bet is to avoid Tom and just talk with her and get her to realize she loves him more. Of course if neccesary asserting dominance in a 1 v 1 with Tom would be effective as well.
ReplyDelete5) The end of chapter 7 was pretty crazy. Daisy killed Myrtle, and now shes a fugitive. I think Daisy was really messed up in the head and angry, (probably drunk too) and just didn't even think about it, just did it. Gatsby might end up having to take the blame for her but i think he will come up with something and will flee the country and cheese his way out of the sticky situation with money or threats if neccesary.
ReplyDelete1) For the most part, Gatsby is just playingit "Cool," and by doing so, Gatsby is practicing, as Daniel mentioned,"Keep your enemies close," Gatsby is pretty musch just trying to posses the situation by getting closer to Tom.
ReplyDelete2) Gatsby chooss to live such a laish lifestyle, but denies to expose his source of income to conceal the true reality of his life. If Gatsby displays the reality then everything he has will go down to the drain, his falsified story will finally be known. Therefore, Daisy will realize that Gatsby is an impostor.
3)With Gatsby's wealth he could possibly be and do anything, however, suffering the consequences would be long gone, due to his wealth.
4)Knowing Daisy, her weakness is directed to wealth and high-class pampering, Gatsby will turn out being her choice.
5)Daisy Left the Hotel very nervous and anxious, driving was definetly not the best choice especially after what went down in the hotel,(Confrontation between Tom and Gastby).Either way if the police found the truth, Gaysby would most likely buy them off.
